CHAPTER 14
They probably thought I was asleep. I heard their entire conversation. I was glad Enzo found someone to talk to. He was always alone after his friends ditched him.
I stared at the ceiling as if it were a television. I guess a part of me hoped a Christmas movie would start playing at any moment. But even the magic of this world couldn’t make that a reality.
I was looking forward to spending Christmas in Dorthcester since Mom brought it up. Honestly, I was relieved to be leaving the screaming behind for a couple of days. But I’d take their fights over all this talk of death.
Usually when I had nightmares, I’d hug Mr. Wombington, but he wasn’t here. A part of me even believed he was responsible for all the beautiful dreams I had. I was pretty sure carrying him around gave people the impression I was more innocent than I looked. I enjoyed eavesdropping when people thought I wasn’t listening.
After they wished each other good night, Enzo and Doopar returned to their beds. His loud snores began a few minutes later. I imagined how excited he was to actually be talking to an elf. Enzo had always been more of a dreamer than me. I could hear him in his room sometimes, making up dialogue for the characters he created on paper. He used to come up with books and comics and give them to me every week.
I shivered as a breeze touched my cheeks, blowing out all the candles around the room. I sat up on the bed and searched for whoever was responsible, my heart pounding fast. Did those creatures find a way in?
A blue speck of light appeared on the ceiling, moving like a hummingbird. My eyes followed it as it hovered above me.
I was about to scream when a deep voice said, “Don’t be afraid.”
“Who’s there?” I whispered, burying half of my face under the covers.
“A friend,” replied the voice as the light glistened.
All the beds in the room were suddenly empty, my surroundings growing dark until invisible.
“Where did they go?” I held a breath.
“They’re sound asleep on their beds,” said the voice, the blue light the only thing in view.
“But I can’t see them.”
“Reality isn’t based on what you can see, sweet Ava.” The light exploded into glitter, spreading above me like stars.
The darkness was replaced by a blue sky. Tall green trees sprung from a field of grass, suddenly covered by flowers colored like the rainbow. Birds flew above me, the flapping of their wings releasing a cloud of glowing dust. A waterfall was behind me, falling into a round lagoon. The air smelled like cinnamon buns on Christmas morning. Blue butterflies appeared, dancing around me while fluttering their purple wings.
I got up from my bed and smiled once the grass rubbed beneath my feet. The blue light appeared over my shoulder. It darted toward the woods and exploded into thousands of particles. White glares of light shaped like people appeared behind the trees, looking like ghosts with no faces, their bodies shiny and white.
